On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
