A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
